practice Session - Riverton House and Lakes

With The warmer upon us, I decided to venture out to Riverton House and Lakes which is around 3 miles from My House. My Main reason for the visit was to Try and catch some fish on some of the Krill & Tuna Method mix from Bait-Tech. Not only was I going to use this on the Method feeder but I intended to dump it down the edge and try for some of the resident Lumps that live in Willow Lake.

On arrival the lake looked in lovely condition and Karl the owner has done a fantastic job, I decided to fish peg 3 as there was a clear mud patch against the far bank that I intended to cast my Feeder to. The Fish were crashing around all over the lake and it was apparent that the warmer weather had kick started the spawning sequence. Would this prove to make the fishing difficult???

My set up for the day consisted of my ever trust worthy Mosella Avalon 10ft Revolution Bomb Rods, My Daiwa Whisker Reels loaded with 6lb Line. A small 24g Guru X-Safe feeder and a 4inch 0.19 HL with a Guru bayonet. Hook baits would be a variety of Meat, Maggot, Boilies.

That's the Far line sorted now I proceeded to set up my pole, I picked a spot in my margin at around 9m from my swim, Here I had an old tree that over hung the water, A perfect holding area. I set my rigs up and they would be identical in case of any problems.

The Rig comprised of 0.19 Ngauge to a 0.17 Hook link, Float of choice would be a DT Float diamond margin in 0.3g. A simple Spread Bulk And a size 12 B911X. Hook baits for here would be either a bunch of dead maggot, double meat or a bunch of worms.

I started off by cast my method to the island for the first hour with very little to show for it apart from 2 small roach and a Skimmer of around 1lb. This tempted me to dump some GB down the edge, so I potted in 5 large pots full of GB. Over the top I potted 1 pot of Loose offerings and then cast the Method out to the Island. Within 30 seconds the rod was almost pulled from the rest and after a short battle a Carp of around 6lb was laying in the net. This carried on for another 45mins with Around 10 more Fish being caught.

Last hour was approaching and I could see some Swirls and Tail patterns on the Margin Line, I could not resist anymore, Picked up the Pole and In it went. I didnt have to wait very long as The float Shot under and My Black NG Elastic was streaming out the end of the Pole. After A battle which seemed to last forever I scooped the net under a mirror Carp of around 8lb, What a start I thought and immediately re baited my rig and got it straight back in. About 2 mins later it shot away again And another Fish of around 6lb was soon in the net. Four more Fish later and I decided to call it a day.

Not a bad start to my first use with the Krill & Tuna, And I will definitely be using it for all my fishing from now on.

I finished the Day with 17 Fish For around 90lb, Not bad when the Fish were preoccupied and around 3 hours Fishing.

Start of a new Era

Hi,

It has been far too long since I updated my blog, so with the help of some great Companies and equipment I am revamping the blog and using it to promote my Fishing, Coaching and Hook Tying.

I am currently awaiting my coaching badges and once these arrive will be conducting coaching sessions and taster days for young people that want to get into the sport.

I have been Tying hooks to order for the past few months and its really catching on, so if you are fed up with tying your own Hook Lengths get in touch and I will tie them for you :)

Over the next few months there are big changes a foot so please keep coming back to see how I am getting on.

Riverton Fishery 26/08/12

Yesterday saw me back at riverton fishery for a few hours on the pellet wag. I decided to fish from peg 14 as I never fished this area before and when I sat on the peg I had around 20-25m to the island. Out came my Garbolino 11'6 commercial rods and I set them up with 2 reactorite 2000 reels. These were loaded with 6lb maxima.

With it only being a short cast to the island I decided to use a 4aaa wag on both rods. One would be set at around 12 inches deep and the other I had set at around 6 inches for when the fish backed off abit. Bait for the session would be 6mm Dynamite xl pellets and i would use the same on the hook via a mosella micro bait band.

I started by pinging 4 pellets out towards the island and then cast out over the top, nothing within 30 seconds so I fed again, reeled in and cast again, this time the float didn't even have chance to settle and I was into my first fish. After a little scrap I scooped the net under a nice little mirror of about 1lb.

Again I re fed and cast out, another bite straight away and another small mirror was in the net. Again I re fed and cast out but this time I wasn't greeted with a bit. 30secs later the float shot under and I latched into a beast, this fish did not want to come in and took me up and down the island afew times before I finally got it to the net. I scooped the net under the fish and lifted it from the water, what a fish, a common of about 11lb was looking back up at me.

Again I re fed and cast out and again the float shot under. This was to carry on for the rest of the afternoon and when I weighed my catch after 4hours I had 76lb of carp and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

I can't wait to return and put it to the test in a match.

A days tuition at Riverton Fishery

On Friday 10th August I took my two eldest children to Riverton Fishery for their first taste of fishing.
we arrived at about 9am and the weather was glorious, we setup on peg 7 of the match lake and I started by showing the kids how to set up a whip. after a short while they had sussed it and we were ready to fish. I covered some Maggots in some Strawberry Atomic Cloud and we were ready to start. I started by explaining to them about feeding and how it is important to get the feed in a tight area when fishing like this. Brody started by throwing about 10 maggots out around 3m and i then proceeded to show them how to flick the rig out. I passed the whip to Saskia and helped her with the first cast, after about 20 seconds the float went under and she swung in a nice roach of about 3oz. Now for Brodys' first cast, out went the rig, float settles and goes straight under. after a little scrap I scoop the net under a nice Skimmer of about 8oz. what a start, after about an hour or two we decided it was my turn to have a fish for some carp, so i set up a method feeder and cast out to the island. within a few seconds the tip flew round and i was playing a nice little fish of about 2lb. this continued untill we decided to call it a day.
I intend to hold several more tuition days at Riverton Fishery in the Future so if your interested please get in touch.

A day on the waggler

Well yesterday saw me at my new local venue Riverton fisheries in north devon.
I turned up in the morning and had a really good chat with the owner, and decided to fish the waggler, it was going to be a 2 pronged attack with the first line being about 2m from the island and the second was going to be towards a platform to my right which was about 16m.
I started by pinging a few casters out towards the island and a few grains of corn down to my right.
Setup was to be my trusty 13ft tourney pro and my Tdx 2508 with 4lb maxima.
A 5bb waggler to a 18 808.

First chuck to the island was rewarded with a skimmer of just over a pound then another and another.
30mins later i had 23 skimmers and then it went quiet, so i had a look down the edge, after 5mins the float dipped under and i connected to a lump, after a great battle i scooped the net under a mirror of about 8lb.

I was having a great session and wasnt even bothered by the freezing temperatures.
After 3 hrs fishing i was ready to call it a day and when i weighed my catch i hqd 52lb of skimmers and 27lb of carp. Overall a superb day qnd one thqt the younger lads that came to watch will never forget.

Withy farm open 28/12/11

Well today i was down at my local venue for the xmas open.
At the draw the talk was of the fancied pegs 9 on both lakes, so when i drew peg 9 on sellwood lake i almost ran to it.
Once at the peg i set up a waggler and straight lead to fish to the island, then it was time to get the pole out.
I planned to fish two lines one with chop worm and caster, the other was to be Got baits atomic pellet with maggot over the top. For the two lines i was going to set up two rigs to cover all options, as this lake is really shallow i setup a 0.2g Rocco to 0.10 mainline and a 0.08 Hooklength. The other rig would be my more positive rig, for this i setup a 0.3g MP his was to 0.12 mainline and a 0.10 hooklength.
Feeding would be simple, at the all in i fed about 100ml of chop worm and caster on the left hand line and a small walnut of micro pellet with a few dead maggots on the other, fired a few 6mm pellets out to the island and cast the waggler over the top, within 2mins i had my first small skimmer of about 4oz
Then nothing, so i refed the waggler line and cast out again, nothing for the next 5mins. Time to have a look over the choppie line, an instant roach was the reward, then again nothing, this seemed to be the pattern for the match, refeed fish then nothing.
This continued untill the last 45 mins when i hooked into a beast over my micro pellet line, after a 20min battle i nslipped the net under a 10lb mirror.
At the weigh in i put 14lb 14oz on the scales which was enough for 5th on my lake. Overall not a bad day which could have been far worse.

Wednesday 1st June 2011

After a good day at Viaduct on the Monday I was really looking forward to this match and arrived at the venue with Lee "Nobby" Noble ready for the draw.
Knowing Park lake quite well I new that a peg in the high 30's would be a good draw or peg 7-8 would be nice also so when Gary (Gaffa) Williams returned with peg 28 I was a little disappointed, but after arriving at my peg I felt abit better after looking around me.

My main attack was going to be Long pole to the island with 6mm meat as feed and for hook bait, I decided to dust the meat in strawberry Atomic Cloud as I thought this would give me the edge over the lads around me.

My rig would consist of a Hillbilly Rat catcher which would be on 0.14 mainline with a 0.12 hook length and a Xedion Txr7 in a size 16. Elastic would be a J-Range Green which is soft enough to land the resident F1s but also power full enough to cope with the larger carp that also live in here.

I also set up a 5m line which consisted of a 0.2 DC18 tied to 0.18 Xedion pole line and a Xedion Txr7 size 14, on this line I would also feed 6mm meat and hope for some larger fish towards the end of the match.
At the all in I potted some meat at 5m and went straight across with my pole to the island, toss potted in some meat and lowered the rig in, 30secs later the float shot under and I was into my first F1 of the day.

This continued for the next hour, shipping out, toss potting in and then BITE, until I got plagued by Rudd in the 4-6oz bracket, not a bad size, but not what you want when your trying to catch a weight of Carp.
I left the line and came in to try my short line, but after 10mins and no joy I went back across and was into the F1s again.

This was the way the match was to plan out and after trying my short line for the final hour without any joy I felt like I hadn't achieved what I could have if I stayed across. At the scales I put 61lb 2oz on them not bad but I should have caught more. Another 4th so I have continued my run of top 4 finishes but hopefully I will do better next time.

Monday 30th May 2011 Viaduct Open

This morning saw me down at one of my favourite venues in the country, I left my house at 0730 and made my long trip down the Boring A303 and after an hours drive I arrived at the venue.

As I was 2 hours early for the draw was keen to have a look around the famous SCAREY CAREY where the carp run well into high 20lb+, after my look around I made my way to the shop so I could grab a brew and get some info from Steve and Paul, after a long chat with paul I decided that the bottom bank (pegs 84-87) would be a good bet.

So 1030 came and everyone was laughing and joking about where they wanted to draw, In went my hand and out came peg 86, I was so excited I ran to my car and made my way to the peg.
On arriving at the peg I decided that my main attack would comprise of a straight lead and pellet/meat approach and then a Big waggler with meat fished over the top.

Out of my holdall came my Garbolino super G 10ft bomb rods and I set them both up with my TDX 3012 reels loaded with 6lb Mosella Xedion reel line,  a 3/4 oz Bomb and a 0.20 hooklength and a Guru QM1 hook. On one would be a hair and quick stop and on the other a micro band.

At the all in I baited my hair with a single 10mm pellet and cast it out approx 30m to where the Bar comes off the island, catapulted a few 8mm pellets around it and within 30 sec's the tip rapped around and my rod was nearly pulled from the rest, After a good fight a Mirror of around 8lb was in the net.

Out it went again and and the rod was hardly in the rest when it flew around again this time a skimmer of around 2lb was the culprit, after 2-3 more casts I decided a change was in order and switched to the Big Waggler and it was a good decision as after 5mins the float shot away and I latched into one of Carey's resident MONSTERS, after a good 20mins I scooped the net under a huge mirror carp which at the weigh in I learnt that the fish weighed 18lb 3oz, WOW what a fish.

I carried on the day putting a few fish in the net and was glad at the weigh in to put 83lb 9oz on the scales, which was enough to beat those along my bank but wasnt enough to take the spoils, oh well a great days fishing and some lessons learnt for my next visit.

Frobury Farm Open 13 Feb 2011

After travelling to the venue for today's match with Lee "Nobby" Noble we were both feeling very confident, Until we saw the lake we were fishing. To say it was small would be an understatement as from every peg you could reach the far side with 14.5m, and as this was to be used for the supercup and be pegged on both banks, it seemed as if it would be terrible.

At the draw I pulled peg 4 from the bag which gave me a peg with the most fish able room on the lake as I had a bowl in front of me which was about 20m in diameter and with only 1 other peg on this bowl i thought my chances of some fish would be quite high.

I decided to fish 3 swims and set up 4 rigs to cover these, at the all in I cupped a large ball of Got Green Grub on my 8m line and proceeded to cup about 100 Atomic pellets onto another line at 1o'clock also at 8m. My main swim for the day (or so I thought) would be at 5m where I would target the resident Rudd, on this line i fed about 10 maggots every min or so.

After fishing the Rudd line for about 10mins with not a bite i decided to try the GB line, a Rudd first put in and then another, and another.
I then re fed the GB line and let it rest while I tried the pellet line, after about 5 mins my float buried and i landed a carp of about 10oz, then nothing so again I re fed and went back over the GB line and started to put a run of carp together, until the lake just died.

After a lot of hard work, adjusting shotting patterns and feeding I managed to get the carp going again and managed to land a further 18 small carp in the last 60mins, at the scales I put 26lb 9oz in the bag which I learned was enough for 3rd place. Not a bad way to introduce myself to the MFS lads.

AAF Gr 2 Match 4 River Avon

Well todays little outing saw me down on the river Avon in Chippenham, after the journey down with Lee "Nobby" Noble we arrived at the HQ for todays match.

At the draw the Gaffer "Gary Williams" drew me B4, not a bad draw I thought as i made my way to my peg, on arrival I found that the stretch had purpose built platforms, ideal no getting wet today then.

I set up 3 pole rigs to cover my pole attack and a waggler rod to fish the far side for the resident Chub.
The first rig would consist of a Garbolino Ds4 1.5g and this would be my lighter rig to fish about 1ft off the deck, this would be tied to 0.12 Xedion pole line, a 0.08 hooklength and a size 20 B560.

The 2nd rig for the session would be my main rig and would be a Ds4 2.0g, this would be tied to 0.12 Xedion pole line, a 0.10 hooklength and a size 18 B560.

The 3rd rig would be my laying on rig and would consist of a Ds13 3.0g tied to 0.14 Xedion pole line to a 0.12 hooklength and a size 16 B560, this would be used if any Bream showed along the stretch.

At the All in I balled 8 large balls on my pole line and started to ping maggot acorss to the line of trees that covered the far bank, first put in on the pole line resulted in a 4oz chublet and then a 2oz dace followed, then nothing it was as if someone had taken all the fish out of the river, I never had a bite for about 1 hour no matter what I tried, so I re fed 2 balls of GB on the pole line and picked up the wag rod.

First cast with the Wag I latched into a 6oz perch and then another followed on the very next cast, then again after 2 fish it went dead, this was very strange.

I rested the Wag line and went back in on the pole, after several runs through I latched into a Chub of about 1 3/4 lb, then another of about 6oz, on the very next run through the float shot away and I connected with a monster, after about 10mins a looked across the river to where my elastic was stretched to see a large silver shadow just under the surface, this fish was over 2 ft long and then SNAP, my hooklength had pinged of a sunken branch, and that was the end of that, Gutted.

For the remainder of the match I continued to work both lines putting a few more fish in my net, at the scales I put just under 5lb on them which was just enough for 3rd in section, which has earned me the nick name of MR Consistant within my team.

Not a bad day afterall.
